Summarizing this year's fieldwork in BOATS

As this season’s fieldwork in BOATS project draws to a close, we’ve truly enjoyed the mostly sunny days at Puddefjorden and Store Lungegårdsvannet. This season kicked off with redeploying receivers after a break while Bergen municipality conducted the capping of the seabed. However, we did get off to a, quite literal, rocky start: an engine failure “stranded us” on the far side of Store Lungegårdsvannet. Fortunately, with quick assistance from the nearby fire department we were towed back to harbor. This setback did delay our startup, but we were back on track shortly after.

This season’s catch efforts included deploying, and regularly checking, six fyke nets. Additionally, because pollock are more pelagic than cod and lobster, we added angling to increase our catch-success. From our efforts we’ve managed to tag 24 cod, 14 pollock, 4 lobsters and even one trout! We also saw a notable increase in recaptures this year, with seven recaptured cod. This signals a good tagging coverage within the cod population.

With many projects going on, this season’s success in BOATS would not have been possible without the invaluable support of the LFI group. A huge thank you to all the 15 contributing employees and students from both BTN and from LFI as a whole that have joined in this season’s field work.

Closing off this field-season, we are going to download data from our receivers, and we are very excited to analyze data from this season.
